Whether you’re looking for a sweeping romance, emotional drama, LGBTQ drama, or one of Netflix’s sexiest films, the streaming service has you covered. And, while Netflix codes may help you find what you’re looking for, we offer a better solution: Browse our selection of must-see flicks (including a handful coming out this month), appearing in the order of our readers’ preference. Some of these films may end up on your list of the best films.

1. The Adam Project

The Adam Project

What you’re in for A time-traveling action-packed sci-fi dramedy set in the Future.

Starring: Mark Ruffalo, Jennifer Garner, Ryan Reynolds, and Zoe Saldana

It’s verified! With 61% of our readers voting for it as the best Netflix film of the year, this high-budget time-traveling thriller earns the top spot. Tom Cruise was cast in it, and the movie was initially scheduled for shooting in 2012. However, because of development problems, it sat idle until Netflix saved it in 2020. The premise centers on a disgruntled fighter pilot (Ryan Reynolds) in 2050 who goes back to save his wife’s life. He unintentionally crashes into 2022 and runs into his 12-year-old self there.

The two embark on a time-traveling adventure where they run into future evil authorities who want to kill them. Consider it a contemporary version of Back to the Future, but with a bit more violence, action, and humor that will undoubtedly appeal to the household’s teenage lads.

2. Enola Holmes 2

Enola Holmes 2

What you’re in for A good mystery film about the famed detective’s sister who founded her detective agency

Starring: Henry Cavill, Helena Bonham Carter, and Millie Bobbie Brown

One of the best Netflix movies to watch with the whole family in 2022 is Enola Holmes 2, which is equally captivating as the original. Millie Bobbie Brown is appealing as the teenage Victorian-era investigator who is not as well recognized as her famous brother but just as intelligent. The teenage detective is working on the case of a missing girl in Enola Holmes 2, based on an original script rather than being adapted from the Enola Holmes teen book series. It leads her to a well-known match factory—one that existed.

Workers at the actual plant, many of whom were teenage girls, went on strike in 1888 for job safety after suffering from the crippling “phossy jaw.” Consider Enola Holmes 2 a mystery with significant history—the Netflix film that 58% of readers rated the best of 2022.

3. The Gray Man

The Gray Man

What you’re in for An exciting CIA thriller about a wanted assassin

Starring: Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, and Alfre Woodard

Before it became one of the most watched Netflix movies of the year, this high-adrenaline thriller, based on the 2009 novel The Gray Man, spent the preceding ten years in various production phases. (At one point, Charlize Theron was supposed to take on the part originally portrayed by Ana de Armas, with Brad Pitt as the lead.) But if you see the movie, you’ll be happy with the current cast; Chris Evans is excellent as the antagonist.

Ryan Gosling plays an agent who has been chosen to join the CIA’s top-secret assassin program in the fast-paced thriller. When corruption is exposed, and a psychopathic killer follows his trail, things go wrong. It’s the best type of popcorn drama, full of surprises right up to the very end.

4. The Good Nurse

The Good Nurse

What you’re in for is an actual disturbing account of a man nurse who committed covert murders.

Starring: Kim Dickens, Jessica Chastain, and Eddie Redmayne

What about The Good Nurse is the scariest? It is based on a real incident. (And true-crime documentary fans will find it a wise choice.) It chronicles the life of nurse Charles Cullen (Eddie Redmayne), who, on the surface, seems to be a kind and giving person. But a coworker (Jessica Chastain) finds out he’s been killing patients when they pass away unexpectedly during his shifts. What is the story’s craziest part?

The in-person The number of victims of Cullen’s 16-year career as a registered nurse at numerous hospitals will never be known. (He was admitted to 29 and is currently serving several life terms.) Redmayne does a fantastic job portraying the seemingly innocent Cullen, and Chastain raises the stakes by attempting to reveal Cullen. You’ll have one question after watching the movie: How could he?

5. Hustle

Hustle

What you’re in for A motivational sports dramedy about two men who support one another’s lives and careers

Starring: Adam Sandler, Queen Latifah, Juancho Hernangomez, and Heidi Gardner

Once again, Adam Sandler plays a man with heart and drive who struggles in his career. In the movie Hustle, he portrays a basketball scout for the Philadelphia 76ers who uncovers an incredible potential while observing locals in Spain play pick-up games (Juancho Hernangomez). The Toronto Raptors’ Hernangomez is a real-life Spanish NBA star. He attempts to get the basketball player drafted into the NBA by bringing him to the United States, but his new acquisition requires extensive preparation. There are many fits and starts along the way, as with most sports dramas, but everything finishes with a heartwarming victory.

6. Luckiest Girl Alive

Luckiest Girl Alive

What you’re in for is A suspenseful mystery centered on a woman who appears to have it all but loses it all when her history catches up with her.

Starring: Connie Britton, Finn Wittrock, and Mila Kunis

The 2015 No. 1 best-selling novel Luckiest Girl Alive by Jessica Knoll follows the story of a magazine writer (Mila Kunis) in New York City who has created the ideal life for herself, replete with the ideal career, ideal looks, and ideal wealthy fiancé. Everyone feels she is fortunate because she survived a high school shooting that claimed the lives of several of her classmates. She is, however, concealing something, and not everyone is convinced that she is truly innocent. This suspense film picks up speed as her ideal life starts to fall apart. You’ll be riveted to the couch as you wait impatiently for the big unveiling.

7. Love & Gelato

Love & Gelato

What you’re in for A Rome-based coming-of-age romantic comedy based on a best-selling YA novel

Starring: Tobia De Angelis, Owen McDonnell, and Susanna Skaggs

It is the movie for you if you want to see a fun romantic comedy or teen film without having to ponder too much. In Love & Gelato, Lina, a 17-year-old, is followed by her dying mother, who begs her to go to Italy and experience a summer like her mother did when she was a child. While there, she discovers life, love, and adventure and falls for not one but two romantic suitors (and gelato, obviously). Discover the stunning city of Rome as Lina navigates her romantic relationships and looks for her biological father. The movie is uncomplicated, carefree, and ice cream-sweet.

8. Do Revenge

Do Revenge

What you’re in for: In a trendy adolescent comedy about queen bees and want-to bees in a wealthy, cliquey high school, they seek Revenge on their bad classmates.

Starring: Austin Abrams, Camilla Mendes, and Maya Hawke

This clever black comedy about two girls who become the target of bullying at their school and band together to get Revenge on their nemesis will appeal to viewers who appreciate dark teen dramas like the cult classic Heathers. You’ll initially support them, but as the plot twists and turns, you won’t be able to identify the true antagonists. It’s a story about friendships and betrayals, but even though it stars kids, it has elements of sex and drugs, so you shouldn’t show it to anyone under the age of 13.

9. The Wonder

The Wonder

What you’re in for A psychological, suspenseful period piece with religious overtones set in Ireland

Starring: Tom Burke, Kila Lord Cassidy, and Florence Pugh

A “wonder child” who claims she hasn’t eaten anything for four months and has only survived on manna from heaven is being investigated by an English nurse (Florence Pugh) in this aesthetically gorgeous drama, which transports viewers to a little Irish town in 1862. But in this subtly unsettling movie, not everything is as it seems; the child and her fervently religious family are hiding a sinister secret. The nurse, still recovering from her tragedy, is forced to decide between abiding by the village elders’ rules and trying to save the kid from imminent death. Just to see Florence Pugh sparkle once more makes it worthwhile to watch.

10. Wedding Season

Wedding Season

What you’re in for: In a romantic comedy, two people pretend to be in love to convince their controlling parents to stop bothering them.

Starring: Rizwan Manji, Pallavi Sharda, and Suraj Sharma

When mothers of first-generation Indian Americans begin interfering with their kids’ romantic relationships, you know you’re in for a belly-laugh-inducing treat. This sweet room-premise com is as follows: To escape the strain of their mothers, two career-driven New Yorkers pretend to date while it is “wedding season.” Even if the plot’s conclusion is predictable, you’ll find yourself rooting for the couple to get back together this time.

Releases in December 2022, you shouldn’t miss

A few recently released movies and one in production didn’t make our reader poll of the top Netflix movies of 2022. The reviews, however, are already available and will be favorable. They’re also coming out around the holidays, making them ideal choices for family movie nights.
